The Keep

by F. Paul Wilson

This novel is well-written, action packed, and really a good read. It’s got Nazis, Jews, a pretty girl, a castle, vampires, guns….everything you could ask for in an adventure novel. The denouement is satisfying and complete, and there are enough twists and turns in the plot so that it is not entirely predictable. I wish it had been longer!

High up in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania, German soldiers stationed in an ancient castle are being killed off one at a time. The soldiers’ mangled bodies are found drained of blood. When even Hilter’s elite SS death squad is unable to stop the chaos, they recruit Theodore Cuza (a Jewish history professor) and his daughter Magda to help find out what’s killing the soldiers.

When Theodore reads a Old Slavonic message written in blood upon the wall of the keep, he learns that a vampire called “Molasar” is killing the Germans. Molasar eases the old professor’s pains and makes promises to him, in an attempt to get the professor to free him from the keep which is a prison built by another immortal–Glaeken.

Glaeken learns that Molasar is trying to break free of his ancient prison and travels across the world for an epic battle between the forces of light and darkness.

This is a great novel! I read it quite a few years ago, and still think fondly of it.
